Many Christians wonder how they can help in times like this. Not everyone has been called to be a scientist, a philanthropist , a supermarket employee , a reporter or any of the other roles that are on the frontline just now, but God has called us to do our part as Christians and nothing we do that is in keeping with the word of God is insignificant.
So how can I be of help?
Pray. At this particular time, just like always, prayer is so powerful, so needed and so important. It’s time not only to pray for our own families and our selves but to extend our prayers to include those who are making decisions, those who are at the fore front of treating the ill, those who are ill at home or in hospital and for the nations of the world as a whole.
The scriptures are clear on what we should do in times like this.
2 Chronicles 7:14 King James Version (KJV)
If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
1 Timothy 2:1-3 New King James Version (NKJV)
Pray for All Men
Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour.
Let them know you care. We got an unexpected message from a respected Christian leader a few days ago. The words and prayers were so encouraging, not just because of what was said but knowing she was thinking about us was just so warming, particularly because we know she is such a busy lady. Another Christian leader who is a music minister sent a beautiful video of her singing and playing her guitar. It was very uplifting at a time like this. It made us think of all the people who are vulnerable who we had not reached out to for a while, those who may be isolated or in need and those people that we sometimes assume are strong and have it all together but also need encouragement.
Many people will be happy to be reached out to or to know that someone is thinking about them, that someone cared or that the hard work they are doing at a time like this is being appreciated. We were prompted to reach out to a few people to let them know that we were there to help in any way we could.
Don’t just think it-reach out and Let someone know you care!
In these days there are so many ways to reach out. Paul constantly kept in contact with his flock and friends and that is why the epistles exist for us today. Probably in the twenty first century he would have sent an email, sent a text or maybe a whatsapp or facebook message- who knows? Depending on the relationship or what he wanted to say, he may have spoken to them over the phone or even used skype or zoom to get in contact. Whichever way you choose, try and keep in touch with people.
Spread love and encouragement -Not fear. These are trying times just as they are. It is a time to encourage people to get serious with their faith and their walk with God. This is the most important thing. Whatever it is that is happening and no matter what may or may not be behind it, let what we are sharing build people up and enlighten them on how to stay physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually healthy as we wait on the Lord. Let what we share encourage people to return to and be firmly fixed in Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 4:29 Good News Translation (GNT)
Do not use harmful words, but only helpful words, the kind that build up and provide what is needed, so that what you say will do good to those who hear you.
1 Thessalonians 5:11 New King James Version (NKJV)
Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.
What can you do practically? Think of practical ways that you can be of help to someone without going against the rules and regulations that are in place and without putting yourself or someone else in harm’s way.
We’re sure there are a lot of things you can think of and if not find out safe ways that other like- minded people are being of help to others and are keeping themselves busy and productive.
It’s important to stick to the regulations that will help with reducing the spread of infection alongside looking for ways that, as an individual, you can help ensure that the hospitals, pharmacies, super markets and other key services are not overwhelmed at this time. May God fill you with wisdom and help you to play your part which may be as simple as just staying home.
Proverbs 4:7 Living Bible (TLB)
Getting wisdom is the most important thing you can do! And with your wisdom, develop common sense and good judgement.
If we can keep this cycle of good going round, then be assured, it certainly will come back to you and before you know it, you will be on the receiving end.
Luke 6:38 New King James Version (NKJV)
Give and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it it will be measured back to you.
Stay Encouraged, Motivated and Empowered.
